A Scrapbook Layout Using Cell Phone Pics + Full Circle Moments

Today is a full circle moment.

Blog hops and design teams were first introduced to me via Twitter early in 2010. I saw a tweet about a ScrapTiffany blog hop and decided to check it out. I remember being blown away by all the creative work the talented design team had put together.

Who knew that by the end of the year, I would also be part of the ScrapTiffany design team? One of my first challenges was to use a sketch as inspiration and if you didn't already know, sketches can be a pain in the buttisimo.

But like I said in the intro, today is a a full circle moment and I have come to accept sketches into my life. This scrapbook page was created from a sketch by ScrapTiffany design team member Sophie...and it was also the closest I had ever followed a sketch without being annoyed!

My Girls LOAD511 Day 28 updated
"My Girls" 12x12 Scrapbook Layout
I used supplies from the MemoryWorks April 2011 Express Kit (you can see other projects here) and pics from my cell phone (created 4x6 photo collages and cropped the photos) to make this fun scrapbook page. The strips were perfect for using small photos and you can see other "sketchy" scrapbook layouts and cards on the ScrapTiffany blog.

Now that you had a look at my most recent ScrapTiffany challenge, let's go back to the full circle moment once again. I officially began my term in January and this is my last ScrapTiffany challenge, for our leader, Tiffany, is a very busy woman (has four jobs, children, volunteer work and she lives in Alaska!) and will no longer continue with a design team on her blog. I know, I know, it's sad, but the design team understands and most of us had no idea that she was THAT busy. We love you Tiffany!

Since this is the end of my term, I wanted to gather together all the links to my ScrapTiffany design team projects and here they are (in reverse order):

Yep! It's been quite an adventure the past six months! Thanks for joining me.

I'll be back next week with a Glue Dots project!

Do you have a favorite scrapbooking manufacturer?

The Happy Days of My Childhood LOAD511 Day 25 updated
"The Happy Days of My Childhood" 12x12 Eco-friendly Scrapbook Layout
Do you have a favorite scrapbooking manufacturer? Is there a company that keeps on making fabulous designs and you can't help yourself from ordering their latest kit?

Mine, which may be of no surprise to you, is Cosmo Cricket. Why? Because of their fun designs and the fact that they are an eco-friendly scrapbooking manufacturer that uses FSC-Certified paper.

I'm sharing this layout with you today for five reasons:

1. ScrapTiffany asked the design team to create layouts and cards by our favorite scrapbooking manufacturers.

2. This is one of the many (31 to be exact) scrapbook layouts I created during Layout A Day in May. You can see all my layouts here.

3. I used Cosmo Cricket's Glubers for the very first time to make those neato fabric flowers with Heidi Grace decorative pins.

4.  I've been scrapbooking my childhood and wanted to show you how cute I was as a kid (you can laugh).

5. Cosmo Cricket products can be found in the MemoryWorks catalog. (Contact me to place an order.)

Stop by the ScrapTiffany blog to see what the design team created by their favorite scrapbooking manufacturers.

Note: I've decided, at least for the summer, to go on a  "blog when I feel like it" kind of schedule. After having issues with my laptop (stupid virus) and being overwhelmingly busy (Layout A Day, design team responsibilities and trying to keep up with two blogs), I want to take a break from it all and just be a mom...not a scrapbooker...not a blogger...just mom.

I still have plans to post every Wednesday during June on this blog, Snap.Scrap.Blog.Tweet, and will continue to have occasional posts on EcoScrapbook, but not every Monday as originally planned. This girl just wants to have fun! No more schedules, only summer-lovin' good times with my daughters.

The purpose is to work on quality posts and not quantity. This will also free up more time to be able to sit back and enjoy reading posts about your creative lives, which is limited during my current schedule.

You are still free to contact me via email or on Twitter, as I will still have my Blackberry nearby (while I play on the swing set or tend to my garden).

What's Your Guilty Pleasure?

Do you have a guilty pleasure? That's what ScrapTiffany asked the design team recently and here's mine...

Guilty! - Digital Scrapbook Collage Made with Picasa
I am so guilty of having a sweet tooth, especially when it comes in chocolate form. It's not so much cookies (which I am guilty of eating an entire box in one day), but it's anything chocolatey. If I had to choose my last meal, it would be a super-duper, rich, double-fudge, sinfully delicious, chocolate cake that's almost like a chocolate fudge cheesecake. Can you picture it? Can you taste it? That's what I'm talkin' about!

Is that too much chocolate for you?

You heard my guilty pleasure, click here see more at the ScrapTiffany blog.

Friendship Quotes & a Scrapbook Layout

"Forever Friends" 12x12 Scrapbook Layout
When I think of friendship, I think of my mom, Patricia, and her long-time friend, Sandra. These two ladies have been friends longer than I have been alive. It was only suitable that I created a scrapbook page about their friendship for today's ScrapTiffany challenge.

I surprised my mom with this layout and left her plenty of space to journal. I look forward to seeing the finished page and I'm sure she'll share it with her friend as well.

I also compiled a list of friendship quotes that I (or you) could use on future scrapbook layouts or cards:

If all my friends were to jump off a bridge, I wouldn't jump with them, I'd be at the bottom to catch them. ~Author Unknown

A good friend is cheaper than therapy. ~Author Unknown

If you live to be 100, I hope I live to be 100 minus 1 day, so I never have to live without you. ~Winnie the Pooh

Friendship is a single soul dwelling in two bodies. ~Aristotle

Friends are like a good bra, supportive, hard to find, and always close to your heart! ~Author Unknown

A stranger stabs you in the front; a friend stabs you in the back; a boyfriend stabs you in the heart, but best friends only poke each other with straws. ~Author Unknown

The friend is the man who knows all about you, and still likes you. ~Elbert Hubbard

All you have to do in life is go out with your friends, party hard and look twice as good as the bitch standing next to you. ~Paris Hilton

Good friends are like stars...You don't always see them, but you know they are always there. ~Author Unknown

The most beautiful discovery true friends make is that they can grow separately without growning apart." ~Katherine Mansfield

Stamping on a Scrapbook Layout + To Do Lists

WARNING:
What you are about to see is controversial (not really),
and may be considered messy to some audiences.
Viewer discretion is advised.

I warned you it was messy. This layout started with a ScrapTiffany stamping challenge and I had a set of stamps that hadn't seen much crafting so I whipped them out of my stamp box and searched for the perfect photo.

About a year ago, I had an idea of doing a scrapbook page about my to do lists. I took the photo and never did anything with it until now.

I'm a todolistaholic. I jot my lists down on scrap paper, in a planner and type them up on my Blackberry's memo pad. And I get such wonderful satisfaction crossing things off my lists (or scribbling over top of them and deleting them from the memo pad). Then I can't wait to do something else so I can cross that off too. Without my to do lists, I probably wouldn't get anything done. I've even had to write "go pee" on my to do list when I was too busy to remember. (I know, that's bad.)

Anyway, I wanted to make the layout look like a to do list, full of color and mess. I think I was successful. Here is a close-up:

And another one:

I'd like to add that I had tons of fun doing this layout and not worrying about being perfect. It was freedom. You should try it.

For more stamped creations (that aren't as messy as mine), head on over to ScrapTiffany and check them out.

ScrapTiffany Recycled Blog Hop: Gifting With Newsprint

It's a ScrapTiffany Recycled Blog Hop! If this is your first stop today, you can start at ScrapTiffany and work your way through all the recycled creations by the design team members.

Before you go, have you ever needed a quick way to wrap a present or just wanted to save money when giving a gift? If your answer is yes, then I have something for you:

Gifting With Newsprint
Covering a box with newspaper is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to wrap a gift, so that's what I did first. Then I used an envelope template and traced the outline onto newspaper.

Envelope Template

After cutting it out, I folded the bottom and sides using Glue Dots® to adhere them together.

I placed a small handmade card inside and used a Removable Glue Dot® to secure the top flap in place.

(Jessica also has a tutorial on how to make gift bags from newspaper that I plan to try in the future.)

It's been so nice having you stop by Snap.Scrap.Blog.Tweet, but I must send you on your way to the next stop on the blog hop.

Say hello to my crafty friend and Twitter buddy Renee of Charms Buttons & Bows. (Don't forget to visit my other blog, ecoScrapbook, to see how many recycled items I used on one scrapbook layout. I'll also have an extra post on Friday for my next ScrapTiffany Challenge: Stamping.)

A Silly & Sweet Scrapbook Layout + the Sketch

It's April 1st, which not only means April Fool's Day, but also time for another ScrapTiffany challenge... a sketch (one that wasn't a pain in the buttisimo) by Sassy Lil' Sketches:

Sassy Lil' Sketch
Here's my take on the sketch:

"Silly & Sweet" 12x12 Scrapbook Layout
The journaling reads: If I could bottle up all of your silliness and sweetness, I'd make a lot of money.

And if it background paper looks familiar, it is! Remember "The Girlie Girl" layout I created for ScrapTiffany with the marble painting tutorial? This is just another sheet of cardstock that was painted on the same day.

Go check out more scrapbook layouts and cards inspired by the sketch over at the ScrapTiffany blog.

My Sleeping Beauty: A Scrapbook Layout Remembering The First Easter of Motherhood

"I tried and tried to stay awake to have my picture taken.
But I was so very tired that I couldn't be awakened.
This whole day was so exciting, I guess it was too much for me.
So I shut my eyes to take a rest, and slept too sound, you see.
Yet I hope that my photo will bring everyone great pleasure,
And as years pass by, and I grow up, my photo you'll always treasure.
~Your Sleeping Beauty"
Author Unknown, Source: Scrapbook.com

"Sleeping Beauty" 8 1/2 x 11 Baby Scrapbook Layout
I couldn't have found a more perfect quote about my sleeping beauty than the one above. I just wish I found it BEFORE I created the layout and added it in place of my boring journaling (oh well). The photo was taken eight years ago on Easter Sunday and was one of several that showcased the newest addition of our family (including ones of her with each family member, eating applesauce for the first time, wearing a bandana and sitting on the roof of my childhood playhouse...don't worry, someone was holding her.)

That photo sat in an album for eight years until I was looking for something that would fit into the "beauty" category to fulfill the most recent ScrapTiffany challenge. When I saw it, I immediately thought "sleeping beauty." Perfect.

Then I started looking for letters and decided to use up stickers that I've had for over five years. I stuck with a neutral theme, distressed, inked and added a hodge podge of embellishments including painted chipboard.

A closer look at my sleeping beauty:

And here's a layout with another photo that was taken the same day (when the sleeping beauty was awake):

Paint, Pretty Things & Bubble Wrap on a Girlie Girl Scrapbook Layout

"The Girlie Girl" 12x12 Layout
She may look like a sweet, little girlie girl, but my two-year-old is fearless (well, almost...a single strand of hair floating in the bathtub water freaks her out) and she's known to get rowdy and loud like when she discovered bubble wrap for the first time. She doesn't mind getting messy with paint and enjoys using up my leftovers. Here she is painting after I completed the layout above:

Scrapbooking Sports: A Soccer Glossary on a Two-Page Layout

"Take the Field" Two-Page Soccer Scrapbook Layout
I'm not a sports fan, but I've always loved working on sports-themed scrapbook layouts. The action-packed photos, team colors and spirited crowds can make scrapbooking those memories even more exciting.

ScrapTiffany recently challenged the design team to create layouts and cards geared around sports. This was an easy one for me since I had several photos that I wanted to scrapbook of my oldest daughter playing soccer.

I don't get many chances to photograph soccer games, but when I do, I end up taking A LOT of photos. And I don't just snap pics of team players and soccer balls. I get distracted by trees and the way the sun shines down on the field.

There's something breathtaking about capturing the sun's beams in our photos and I wanted to display that feeling of warmth on the day of the game.

After I chose the photos and decided where they were going to go, I picked out coordinating cardstock and began putting it all together. I wanted a big bold title, but the letters I had chosen didn't match the layout. I pulled out black acrylic paint, painted it on and then applied a thin coat of black, sparkly Stickles.

I didn't feel like writing the typical journaling since I had recently completed another soccer scrapbook layout, so I opted for a soccer glossary. Figured it would also help my daughter (and me) learn more about the sport she plays.

To finish off the layout, I added two pieces of ribbon and 14 buttons in honor of the two teams, 7 players each, that play during the game. And that was my soccer scrapbook page.

Visit the ScrapTiffany blog to see other sports-themed scrapbook layouts and cards and feel free to share yours with her too!

Scrapbooking with Metal Embellishments

When was the last time you used metal on a scrapbook page? ScrapTiffany's most recent challenge asked that very question and I responded with this Christmas scrapbook layout:

When I was reorganizing my scrapbook supplies last month, I came across the metal oval embellishments and frame that are showcased in the layout above. Here's a closer look at the frame that surrounds a smaller image of the main photo:

My family and I were dressed in black, white and gray colors for our Christmas photos. These neutral colors acted as a solid base for the layout which allowed red to dominate the page

I added a splash of color on the background paper using red acrylic paint. I journaled on a rose diecut (that had been hiding in my supplies for over five years) and then added wired ribbon toward the bottom of the layout that I recycled from a Christmas gift. I've always liked the look of pleated ribbon on scrapbook pages and this was the first time I had actually tried that technique. I'm assuming it's easier to do with wired ribbon rather than regular ribbon and I will be incorporating more pleated ribbon in my scrapbooking.

All the small photos were from the collage Christmas cards I made at Shutterfly (I had a code for five free cards and figured I could use one on a scrapbook page) and the larger photo is a 4x6 black and white print. Overall, I am very pleased with how my layout turned out since I'm a big fan of black, white and red layouts.

Color Inspiration: A Yellow & Gray Scrapbook Layout

12x12 Scrapbook Layout: "Sisters"

I love when I have an idea for a scrapbook layout and I'm able to bring it to fruition without getting sidetracked or changing the design along the way. For my third ScrapTiffany challenge, I needed to create a scrapbook page with the colors yellow and gray. I knew I wanted to use black and white photographs and keep the layout simple.

With a vision of yellow paper flowers, I sifted through my 10 gallon container of scraps and found a perfect piece of yellow cardstock. After making the flowers, I doodled grass and stems onto white cardstock. Then I matted the white square with black cardstock and added a 12x12 sheet of gray cardstock to bring it all together. I adhered my photos and wrote down the title and date. Done! (And in less than an hour!)

There are more yellow and gray scrapbook layouts and cards over at the ScrapTiffany Blog. Go check them out!

Sketches Can be a Pain in the Buttisimo

I've said it before and I'll say it again: "I don't like sketches!" I could probably dish them out, but I lose my scrapbooking mojo and get that feeling of nails scratching on a chalkboard when I have to attempt another sketch. I like to do my own thing and that's usually whatever the photos tell me to do.

Yes! Photos talk to me telepathically! They say "put me there" or "crop me this way" or "use these colors."

But I still do sketches and even though I don't like them, I like the challenge and the learning experience...and my first ScrapTiffany sketch was definitely a challenge:

This is my take on the sketch:

I used part of the contact sheet on the layout because it just worked and shows other photos from the same day (even though some of the photos are flipped the wrong way). I  also doodled in place of the stitching on the sketch and "F is for fun" because my family had a blast at a Toledo Mudhens game on Father's Day 2010:

Here's a closer look of one of the flowers:

You can see other scrapbook layouts and cards created from the sketch on the ScrapTiffany blog. And if you ever lose your scrapbooking mojo, read Eric's Load of Scrap series on Finding Your Scrapbooking Mojo (the link goes to Part 3).

The Crafting of an Imperfect Scrapbook Layout

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
-Albert Einstein, German-born Theoretical Physicist

I scrapbook. Over and over again. Yet, the process of crafting a scrapbook page can change according to the mood I'm in or what I want to visually display.

Sometimes I start with a photo or story, other times a gorgeous combination of paper or even a prompt from a scrapbooking class. For my very first ScrapTiffany challenge, I chose to begin my scrapbook page with embellishments.

The ScrapTiffany Challenge was to scraplift a layout from the last design team (see other design team creations at the ScrapTiffany Blog). I chose a page by Becca from a November 2010 blog post because I liked the butterflies that graced her page and how she incorporated a group of squares on the layout.

As I dug through my supplies, I found three flowers and felt butterflies that were orange, pink and red. Now I was in for another challenge...how am I going to make a layout with orange, pink and red (when I'm not a big fan of orange)?

The search for additional supplies began, so I...

  • Grabbed some leftover lace from my graduation layout.
  • Picked out a pink and reddish notecard to add to the background behind the journaling.
  • Chose black rub-ons.
  • Decided that the background needs to be on 12x12 white cardstock.
  • Cut out orange circles using a small Christmas cookie tin as a guide.
  • Planned to doodle with a black marker.
  • Knew I would definitely be distressing!

Once I had the supplies, I decided on photos. I had three different sets of photos to chose from, all with scrapable qualities and would have done well on the layout I was in the process of creating, but I had that special feeling, these are the ones, when I chose the two photos of my girls being silly. The colors in the photo worked well with the chosen three (orange, pink and red) and with the additions of green and blue, my layout color scheme suddenly expanded. (My original plan with the layout was to use the "chosen three" colors with black and white and no other colors.)

To bring everything all together, I remembered the paper I bought at my last scrapbooking crop and thought Scrumdiddlyumptious! These are my squares!

Crafting of the layout began, so I...

  • Cropped the photos.
  • Added lace.

  • Doodled on the orange circles and notecard.
  • Distressed some squares, crinkled others and inked them all.

  • Played around with placement.
  • Started adhering the elements to the page.
  • Used brads to secure the flowers (and used scrap paper on the back of the layout to cover the brads).

  • Added a rub-on title.
  • Doodled on the paper (I think I went overboard on this).
  • Distressed and inked the 12x12 edges (It's okay to be messy).
  • Stamped a journaling box, distressed and split apart the edges and inked.

  • And added rick rack.

Done!

This is definitely not my favorite scrapbook layout and I see many flaws, but it's still another layout done and a few memorable photos scrapped. The truth is, I've never been big on scraplifting or following sketches. I just let the process take me where it wants to go.
