Ramblings From My Speck of the Universe

"Life is a Journey" 12x12 Scrapbook Layout, MemoryWorks Simple Stories: Life Documented Kit
I always have ideas for blog posts. In fact, at the end of February, I created my blog calendar and filled it up until the end of April. I decided to only post twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays, with an additional blog post here and there due to design team requirements.

But here I am, rambling on about random bloggy stuff when I had originally planned to share my experience with The Cinch by We R Memory Keepers. Let me just say, I had great intentions on using this new tool of mine by now (I received it as a Christmas gift), but I still haven't even tried it yet! I got it out of the box, but soon realized that I didn't have any wires. I placed and received my order, but still...I haven't tried it.

I know I talked about trying something new on Tuesday and I will, once I complete all the other things (many new) on my to do list. This is what's been going on in my speck of the universe:

  • Used my Polaroid PoGo printer (another new thing I received for Christmas) with my cell phone. Fun to play with, but doesn't have the best quality. I plan to blog about this in the future.
  • Been creating layouts for a special series happening on another blog next month. Once it's formally announced, I will tell you more. ***UPDATE!!! Go check out Sue Mylde's blog, Just Perspective, for all the info!***
  • Writing blog posts for ecoScrapbook. I'll be launching the new blog in April with posts every Monday and I also signed-up for a Recycled Blog Hop with ScrapTiffany, April 13-14. So you will see two recycled projects by me during the blog hop, one here and one at ecoScrapbook.
  • Organizing and making stuff for an April 9th craft show at Calvary Bible Chapel in Toledo, Ohio.
  • Also making stuff for ecoScrapbook on Etsy. I don't have a lot of products yet, just premade pages and handcut flowers that I'll be listing in April. I have big plans for my shop, but taking baby steps right now.
  • Thinking of ideas for my next Glue Dots and ScrapTiffany projects. I'll be working on those this weekend.
  • Other to dos: signed up for Earth Hour this Saturday at 8:30 pm (lights out!), potty training my almost 3-year-old (she's not interested), needing to recycle approximately 100 Capri Sun pouches (I hate having to cut and rinse them, but it's better than them ending up in the landfill, plus, my daughter gets prizes), and I'm a week behind on my vacuuming.

Those are my excuses why I haven't used The Cinch yet. Justified? I hope.

As always, thanks for stopping by Snap.Scrap.Blog.Tweet!

The 3 L's of St. Patrick's Day: Layouts, Leprechauns & Luck

"The Story of the Leprechaun" 12x12 St. Patrick's Day Scrapbook Layout
Happy St. Patrick's Day! Today is a day of green things, rainbows and luck (at least in the modern day sense). It's also the time when a sneaky leprechaun visits our house (re: The Story of the Leprechaun). He starts leaving things on the front porch about a week or two before St. Patrick's Day and even though my oldest daughter writes him notes pleading for him to stay or visit her at school, he doesn't allow himself to be caught.

A week ago, the leprechaun "sent" a postcard to my girls (and I'm sure he would have taken it to the post office if he had time):

Decoupaged St. Patrick's Day Postcard
Can you believe the leprechaun decoupaged a postcard? That's what my 8-year-old noticed when she was looking at it. He's a crafty one! The next day, my daughter asked me if I was pretending to be the leprechaun because "leprechauns don't decoupage, mommies do." I told her that ANYONE can decoupage (with free St. Patrick's Day clip art from Vintage Holiday Crafts).

So she left a note on the front porch for him and checked it each day, waiting for some sort of response from the leprechaun. Two days ago, he took the letter and left a couple coins. Of course there was plenty of excitement and the girls are little bit richer. I wonder what he'll bring today.

There are plenty of fun (non-alcoholic) things to do on St. Patrick's Day like make a rainbow with paper scraps:

St. Patrick's Day Paper Rainbow
Check out another version of the rainbow over at It's a Crafty Life. My rainbow was also included in a colorful roundup of all things Roy G. Biv at Funky Polkadot Giraffe. And if you can't get enough rainbows, visit Simple As That for St. Patrick's Day printables.

Still want more? Do you have Lucky Charms lovers? Then they will love this "I'm So Lucky" printable for treat bags by the eighteen25 sisters. Short on time? 30-Minute Martha has a few quick ideas for St. Patrick's Day. Or if you have some extra time and your kids want to catch a leprechaun, Family Fun has a three different traps to try.

And since we are on the subject of luck, there's a little challenge for MemoryWorks consultants this month with a "lucky" theme (if you want to join the fun, sign-up to be a consultant) and here's the layout I created with MemoryWorks supplies:

"I Love Life" 12x12 MemoryWorks Scrapbook Layout
I love life. There are so many beautiful and inspiring things on earth and I journaled about them at the bottom of the page, but I kept thinking about Japan. My words didn't feel real as I thought about all the devastation in Japan. Although nature is beautiful, we were reminded that it has a dark side through recent catastrophic events. I destroyed my journaling like the earthquake and tsunami destroyed so many lives.

I am lucky to be alive. I am lucky to be warm, with food and water, shelter and my loving family safe and near.

Even though I'm celebrating all things green today with my family, I can't stop thinking about the people of Japan. I wish we could bottle all this St. Patrick's lucky day feeling and send it to Japan. They need it more than we do.

My Sleeping Beauty: A Scrapbook Layout Remembering The First Easter of Motherhood

"I tried and tried to stay awake to have my picture taken.
But I was so very tired that I couldn't be awakened.
This whole day was so exciting, I guess it was too much for me.
So I shut my eyes to take a rest, and slept too sound, you see.
Yet I hope that my photo will bring everyone great pleasure,
And as years pass by, and I grow up, my photo you'll always treasure.
~Your Sleeping Beauty"
Author Unknown, Source: Scrapbook.com

"Sleeping Beauty" 8 1/2 x 11 Baby Scrapbook Layout
I couldn't have found a more perfect quote about my sleeping beauty than the one above. I just wish I found it BEFORE I created the layout and added it in place of my boring journaling (oh well). The photo was taken eight years ago on Easter Sunday and was one of several that showcased the newest addition of our family (including ones of her with each family member, eating applesauce for the first time, wearing a bandana and sitting on the roof of my childhood playhouse...don't worry, someone was holding her.)

That photo sat in an album for eight years until I was looking for something that would fit into the "beauty" category to fulfill the most recent ScrapTiffany challenge. When I saw it, I immediately thought "sleeping beauty." Perfect.

Then I started looking for letters and decided to use up stickers that I've had for over five years. I stuck with a neutral theme, distressed, inked and added a hodge podge of embellishments including painted chipboard.

A closer look at my sleeping beauty:

And here's a layout with another photo that was taken the same day (when the sleeping beauty was awake):

Decorating Easter Eggs With Googly Eyes

Almost every year, I wait to the last minute to decorate Easter eggs and end up using a store-bought kit to dye the eggs in a variety of ways. But not this year!

Fun for the kids and easy to make, these googly-eyed Easter eggs are too cute to pass up!

Supplies:

1. Remove the flower tops from the stems and cut off the excess plastic on the back of the flower.

2. Adhere the flowers to the top of the eggs with Removable Glue Dots®.

3. Use Removable Glue Dots® to attach two eyes to each egg.

Now that was fast and mess-free!

Paint, Pretty Things & Bubble Wrap on a Girlie Girl Scrapbook Layout

"The Girlie Girl" 12x12 Layout
She may look like a sweet, little girlie girl, but my two-year-old is fearless (well, almost...a single strand of hair floating in the bathtub water freaks her out) and she's known to get rowdy and loud like when she discovered bubble wrap for the first time. She doesn't mind getting messy with paint and enjoys using up my leftovers. Here she is painting after I completed the layout above:

What Did I Learn From 28 Layouts in 28 Days?

It's been three days since I completed a scrapbook layout. February's Layout A Day ended on Monday and it was the best one I've had the pleasure to be a part of (and this was my third round, with a fourth one coming up in May). To celebrate 28 successful days of scrapbooking, the last layout I submitted to the LOAD211 Flickr group was this one, inspired by newspapers:

"Layout A Day" LOAD211 Day 28
During LOAD, an idea popped into my head about creating a layout like a newspaper page and I rediscovered it when thinking about a new way to display all the pages I made during February. I created the photo collage in Picasa and since I don't have Quark, PageMaker or a digital template on my computer, I used WordPerfect to create the layout. I made the title as text art, wrote the date in a text box, inserted the photo collage, printed and journaled in my own handwriting.

And now, let's rewind to the beginning of LOAD211. My goals consisted of  four things: 1. Catch up on scrapbooking. 2. Follow the challenges. 3. Experiment. 4. Scrapbook faster. I did each one and then some.

Lain Ehmann delivered inspiration every single day and with my preparations for LOAD in January, I let creativity be my guide. When I had an idea for a layout, I didn't question it and stopped thinking too much about where to place everything on a page.

"Beautiful" LOAD211 Day 5: Magazine inspiration
We were shown a magazine page on Day 5 and I lifted the colors to create the scrapbook layout above of the orchids I received for Mother' Day last year. I quickly grabbed paper, letters and other embellishments and put it all together. There was no time for second guessing myself and I ended up being pleased with the results. This kind of thinking kept me going throughout the month.

In addition to LOAD, I also took Karen Grunberg's Big Picture Class "Embrace Imperfection" early in the month where I was reminded why I scrapbook in the first place (sorry for a full paragraph of bold text, but this was an "aha moment")...

I scrapbook for the future. I have stories that need to be told and won't always be around to tell them. I don't have to worry about being perfect. My grandchildren will not care if something is crooked on a page. All they will want are a little piece of me. A little piece of their history.

With that in mind, I went back to my early life, embraced imperfection and followed Day 10's prompt of free writing a memory. I created one of my favorite scrapbook layouts:

"Playhouse" LOAD211 Day 10 + Embrace Imperfection (BPC): Free write a memory + Be imperfect
I started with two imperfect photos. One was a little blurry and the other had small cracks in it, but they had a story that needed to be told. They were photos of my childhood and held special memories I wanted to share with my children. I knew I was going to have a lot of journaling, so I experimented by using acrylic paint on a stamp to create lines to write on. These lines weren’t perfect, but that was okay and I started writing down my story. No rough drafts. No pencils. Just a black marker and flow. The title was mixed up letters and not in a straight line. Once again, that was okay. So what if there were a few mistakes. A memory was documented.

In addition to embracing imperfection, I let my black marker take the lead. After doodling through my Sketchbook Project last November, I had more confidence to write and doodle on my pages without using pencil first. Here's one that I wrote on with bold letters:

"When You Were Two" LOAD211 Day 16: Scraplift Melanie Louette
This was for Day 16's challenge to scraplift a specific layout (chosen by Lain) by Melanie Louette. It's not anywhere near the layout Melanie created, but I did use a photo at the top (Melanie's had 4), with a strip underneath (I used ribbon) and patterned paper at the bottom.

Here's another layout where my BFF is a black marker:

"This is What Hell Looks Like" LOAD211 Day 20: Intentional imperfection
As you can see, I had fun with my hellish layout. There are several things that don't fit into the "perfect" category, but the most intentional imperfection (Day 20's challenge) is how the photos are cropped. None are perfect squares or rectangles, something that wouldn't work on most layouts, but worked on this one since I cropped around the signs in the photos (except the aerial view postcard). I also used embellishments that I didn't really care for, but they worked with the story of when I went to Hell.

Like I said earlier, "Playhouse" is one of my favorite layouts and this is my other:

"Armadillo" LOAD211 Day 21: Try something new
I tried something new. Actually, I did four new(ish) things: used Ranger's misting spray, Stickles, added a butterfly patch and stitched a border. This was also probably the layout that took me the longest to complete because of the hour + drying time of the Stickles. But that was okay and allowed me to take my time with stitching and journaling.

I've been wanting to scrapbook the photo of my girls with the Texas Roadhouse armadillo since the day I took it over five months ago. I remembered how my youngest ran across the playground to see and hug the armadillo, but also wanted to ask my girls what they remembered and I'm glad I did.

My two-year-old said she lost her shoe when she ran to give the armadillo a "huggie." I forgot about that. This layout serves as a reminder to include your children, partner, friends and family in the scrapbooking process. They will help you tell the stories within your scrapbook albums.

What will I miss most about LOAD? The people. The wonderful and talented scrapbookers that supported me and each other. Yes, I completed my goals for the month and have a sense of accomplishment, but what keeps bringing me back is the community. I think my fellow LOADsters would agree too.

Scrapbooking Sports: A Soccer Glossary on a Two-Page Layout

"Take the Field" Two-Page Soccer Scrapbook Layout
I'm not a sports fan, but I've always loved working on sports-themed scrapbook layouts. The action-packed photos, team colors and spirited crowds can make scrapbooking those memories even more exciting.

ScrapTiffany recently challenged the design team to create layouts and cards geared around sports. This was an easy one for me since I had several photos that I wanted to scrapbook of my oldest daughter playing soccer.

I don't get many chances to photograph soccer games, but when I do, I end up taking A LOT of photos. And I don't just snap pics of team players and soccer balls. I get distracted by trees and the way the sun shines down on the field.

There's something breathtaking about capturing the sun's beams in our photos and I wanted to display that feeling of warmth on the day of the game.

After I chose the photos and decided where they were going to go, I picked out coordinating cardstock and began putting it all together. I wanted a big bold title, but the letters I had chosen didn't match the layout. I pulled out black acrylic paint, painted it on and then applied a thin coat of black, sparkly Stickles.

I didn't feel like writing the typical journaling since I had recently completed another soccer scrapbook layout, so I opted for a soccer glossary. Figured it would also help my daughter (and me) learn more about the sport she plays.

To finish off the layout, I added two pieces of ribbon and 14 buttons in honor of the two teams, 7 players each, that play during the game. And that was my soccer scrapbook page.

Visit the ScrapTiffany blog to see other sports-themed scrapbook layouts and cards and feel free to share yours with her too!
