3 Words to Put the Spring Back In Your Scrapbooking

It's spring and the perfect time to reevaluate how you scrapbook. How do you that?

That's right. Try something new.

I can compile a list of things for you to try, but only you know what ideas have been festering inside your brain or at the bottom of your to do list. Now is the time to pick one of those ideas and just do it!

Is there a technique you've been dying to try? Then do it! Always wanted to make a mini-scrapbook? Go for it! Ever dreamed of starting your own scrapbooking business? What's stopping you?

And once you tried it, pick something else and just do it. Then repeat.

The Retweetables: Design Team Calls

How can Twitter help you become part of a creative design team? Here's a little story about how I used social media to land a spot on the Glue Dots® Design Team...

About a year ago, I purchased my first smartphone, a BlackBerry, and my Twitter life was forever changed. I was no longer tweeting random messages via text or the occasional 140 character bit from the web, I had UberTwitter on my phone.

From the palm of my hand, I began connecting with other scrapbookers all over the world and eventually, I saw a tweet from Glue Dots announcing their search for a design team.

Page7

I applied (the messy layout above from my A Week in the Life scrapbook shows a rough draft of my application) and now I can call myself a Glue Dots® Dottess. Take it from me, it's possible to find your spot on a design team by being active on Twitter (or by reading this blog post about design team announcements on Twitter).

Are you ready to unleash your creativity? Check out these 8 design team calls that I spotted on Twitter:
Whew! That sounds like a lot of work if you're going to apply for each design team! Good luck!

The Final #LOAD: 31 Layouts in October

Yesterday was the last day of October's Layout A Day. I completed 31 layouts in 31 days just like I did in May and couldn't be more proud, relieved and sad all at the same time. After having a set routine for an entire month, the day after is a bit of a shock. But it's okay. I have other projects to work on, dishes that needed to be washed, laundry that needed to be put away (that took me about 45 minutes since it had been neglected for about a week) and I was able to spend a little more time just hanging out with my two-year-old.

I love LOAD because I get a lot of scrapbooking done in a short amount of time and I'm able to meet and be inspired by other LOAD participants. A perfect combination and I'm looking forward to another LOAD in February.

So, what did I learn? (As seen in the layout above, which also made it to Flickr's Explore gallery yesterday!!)

  • Scraps of paper can turn into a beautiful layout.
  • Sometimes when I don't think my layout is great, someone else does.
  • I still have issues with sketches.
  • I need to focus more on telling a story.
  • Q&A pages are fun to do.
  • Two words can spark an idea that you didn't see coming.
  • Quotes are perfect for scrapbook pages.
  • Conversations can make a layout.
  • There's a story in my inbox.
  • It's okay to journal just the facts.
  • 12x12 layouts are my comfort zone.
  • If I don't have the perfect supplies, I make them.
  • I don't have to wait for the perfect product or photo.
  • I love black & white layouts with a pop of color.
  • I'm getting more comfortable with digital scrapbooking.
  • I don't need fancy digital templates to create digital scrapbook pages.
  • I can tell a story with product.
  • I love to make pages for my daughters.
  • I want to scrapbook more photos from my childhood.
  • You don't need photos to make a scrapbook page.
  • It feels good to distress and tear paper.
  • Some photos are great in color, but not in black & white and vice versa.
  • Journaling doesn't need to look perfect.
  • Sometimes a photo is all you need to tell a story.
  • I want to do more "then & now" pages.
  • There is still so much more to learn.
  • There is still so much more to scrap.

Halfway Through Layout A Day (#LOAD)

I'm on Day 15 of October's Layout A Day and proud to say that I haven't missed a challenge yet. Today's challenge was to use items that don't normally go together. In the layout above, I used flowers and the color pink on a page with men. It works and I like it. The photo is meaningful since it showcases three generations and I believe that it was the first time that these three men had a photo taken together.

The man on the left is my father-in-law and I recently created a website for his business, Consolidated Hunter: Heating, Plumbing & Air Conditioning. I did it through Blogger and tweaked it to make it look like a website. I would love it if you checked it out and let me know what you think. It's my first attempt at web design (besides this blog).

As always, thanks for stopping by ScrappinMemories4U.com! See the rest of my #LOAD layouts on Flickr.

Birthday Scrapbook Layouts & Party Photo Tips

One of my favorite things to do after a birthday party is let my children play with the balloon decorations. They get crazy and have loads of fun while I take dozens of photos. (We always play it safe and are very careful about the tiny pieces of popped balloons, so don't worry about that.) The joy in a child's eyes when (s)he attacks a bundle of balloons is priceless.

Not only do I take balloon photos, but I also take photos of:
  1. Party preparations
  2. Invitations
  3. Before/After (you know, neat vs. messy)
  4. Food and drinks
  5. Decorations
  6. Party guests (posed and candid)
  7. Cake (cake smashing if you're lucky!)
  8. Gifts
  9. Party outfit(s)
  10. And of course, the birthday boy or girl
Parties go by fast so make a list of the photos you want to take beforehand and check them off as you go. While the party is still fresh in your mind, take the time to write down everything you remember and ask your family/friends what their most memorable moments were too.

P.S. Be sure to visit next week when I post my comic book scrapbook layouts featuring The Super Sisters and the Balloon Attack! You won't want to miss this!!

Sports Themed Scrapbook Layouts

Are you a sports fan? Do you know someone that plays a sport? If so, then I'm sure you have plenty of sports-related photographs. Team spirit can easily be displayed in scrapbooks with all the sports themed paper, kits, stickers, bingo cards and albums that are available for purchase. When I was scrapbooking in high school, I had to make my own scrapbook page embellishments with construction paper, markers and rubber cement. I am so glad that scrapbookers can now chose from a large variety of archival quality scrapbooking supplies that are acid-free and photo-safe.

Here are a few sporty scrapbook pages that weren't glued together with rubber cement:

"Dolphins" (12x12 Page Layout)

"My Little Girl" (12x12 Page Layout)

"OSU Twins" (12x12 Two-Page Layout)

Baby Scrapbook Layouts: Journaling to remember your baby's special moments

Babies! They are so cute and cuddly when they aren't stinky. They grow so fast and before you know it, what was once helpless in your arms is now toddling around, eating Cheerios with a dash of dog hair off the floor. So grab your camera and take lots and lots and lots of photos! Don't worry, you can always delete the bad ones and there will be many of them with a fast-moving bundle of joy zooming around your living room and the store and any open space, especially when your oldest child is playing soccer and you have to chase your toddler onto the soccer field. (Yes, I know this from experience.)

When your child is still a baby, make it a habit to write down memories and accomplishments in a journal since you won't have as much time to scrapbook. By doing this, you will have what you need for the journaling that goes alongside the photographs on your scrapbook pages. "Mommy brain" will cause you to forget some of these memories, so after taking photos of your child eating applesauce for the first time, write it down in a journal or even a piece of paper.

Quotes can also capture a special moment by setting the mood of a scrapbook layout. The quote can be from a famous person or even your own child. Just remember to document as much as possible as your child grows up. Photo albums are great, but scrapbooks with photos and journaling are even better.

With all the recent excitement and craziness of getting ready for a craft show, I didn't spend as much time reading tweets, but I did see the ones below. I want to give Nancy Nally of ScrapbookUpdate.com a big shout out to say congratulations on six years of giving us crafty ladies (and gentlemen) the news we need to stay updated on the scrapbooking business. The Retweetables: Getting messy, laughing and talking about fears

I never got the chance to "Trash the Dress" after my wedding almost ten years ago. Although my dress did get a little messy because of the rain prior to the outdoor ceremony and right after my husband and I said our vows, I didn't get it dirty on purpose. Even after a professional cleaning, there are a few mud stains on my wedding dress, but I don't mind because if I would have known about dress trashing back then, I definitely would have jumped in a lake, rolled around in the sand or splashed a rainbow of colored paint on my dress.

Since I didn't "Trash the Dress" back in 2000, I trashed it a couple weeks ago on the scrapbook layout above. It appears as though I'm in water (I hope) with a sunset (an old CD) in the background. I crazily and messily distressed and inked the edges of just about everything and added a few other details.

I decided to share this layout with you today because I spotted a few "messy" tweets (and others that are noteworthy) during the past week, which are now part of The Retweetables. You must say "The Retweetables" with a deep, yet energetic voice to really make it work and point your finger to the sky. I don't know why, but this is always in my mind when I do my #retweetable post.

Okay. Here they are:

Messy
Messy & Funny

I won Marcal Small Steps seeds and now it's your turn!!!

If you follow me on Twitter (@ohiodanielle), you may have heard that I won seeds from Marcal Small Steps (@MarcalSmallStep). Yay for me! It was the first (and only) time I ever won anything on Twitter. A week after the contest, a large envelope arrived in the mail will an abundance of Mammoth Sunflower seeds. What a coincidence! I had already planned on planting this large type of sunflower for backyard privacy like I did in 2007:

These Mammoth Sunflowers grew TALL which is why I wanted to plant them again.

Sunflowers are happy flowers. They grow small and they grow tall, but no matter their size, sunflowers provide cheerful smiles and plentiful seeds. AND now YOU get a chance to experience your very own sunflower garden!

The first 6 people that comment on this post and leave their Twitter name or email address will win Marcal Small Steps Mammoth Sunflower Seeds!

Winners will receive two packets of Mammoth Grey Stripe Sunflower seeds! Good luck!

Layout Supplies Used: DCWV 70% Recycled Paper, Glue Dots, Fiskars Adhesive Tabs, brads, cardboard, Heidi Swapp Edge Distresser, AC Memory Marker.

Article about Scrappin' Memories 4U Custom Scrapbooking

You create the memories...she'll display them

Got pictures? Maybe you have too many and not enough time to do anything with them. This past summer stay-at-home mother Danielle Hunter started Scrappin' Memories 4U. "I just love scrapbooking," says Hunter who has been scrapbooking for over 20 years.

Scrapbooks are a wonderful way to preserve your memories, but many of us simply don't have the time, or haven't invested in the scrapbooking tools and supplies. Simply put, Hunter says, "My job is to get those pictures out of boxes and into scrapbooks so people can share their memories with others."

After you've carefully selected your pictures, you can select decorative cardstock and other embellishments for your album. You may purchase products on your own at the local craft store, or through Hunter who is also a Memory Works consultant.

She charges an hourly rate which includes tax, adhesives, plain cardstock, etc. Depending on how elaborate a book you prefer, it takes approximately 30 minutes to one hour to complete one 12x12 scrapbook page. Through artistic design and personal journaling, your pictures will come to life to enjoy in the present, and to pass down for generations.

by Karen Zickes (Toledo Parent, November 2007)

Welcome to the Scrappin' Memories 4U Blog!

Here I am! Starting my very first blog about scrapbooking and actually, my very first blog, period. My scrapbook journey has been a long one, so how did I start scrapbooking?

When I was around four-years-old, my first scrapbook appeared in front of me, a blank canvas given to me by my mother who saw a creative spark. I filled it with the pictures I cut out of magazines and store sale ads. There were pages and pages of babies, babies with their mommies, bunnies, Easter candy, bunnies with Easter candy (obviously it was around the time of Easter, which often falls near my April birthday).

Then I moved onto making scrapbooks of various keepsakes like movie tickets and celebrity autographs. Once I reached middle school and had an abundance of cheerleading pictures (Go Streetsboro Rockets!) I truely discovered my love of mixing photos with paper, creating handmade embellishments, and even pop-up pages...and I had a lot of fun scrapbooking with a my best friend too (Hi Polly!). My scrapbooking hobby continued throughout my high school and college years (Go Toledo Rockets!) and helped me to design eye-pleasing layouts for newspapers and newsletters.

Once I was married and had my first child, I became the crazy lady with the camera, constantly taking photos of my beautiful baby girl. Then I received the phone call that changed my scrapbooking life. Read more about that call and my first crop party here. Now I was the crazy scrapbook lady with the camera, constantly scrappin' photos of my daughter.

In 2007, I launched Scrappin' Memories 4U, my scrapbook design business and started making scrapbooks for people who don't have time to do it themselves. I also became a Memory Works Consultant so I could have access to great scrapbooking products. Then I took a long scrapbook break to have another beautiful baby girl in 2008. Today, I'm back in the swing of things--scrappin', picture-taking, writing and blogging about scrapbooking.
